The official answer: Ethylene glycol ethyl ether acetate is a colorless liquid, miscible with normal organic solvents and soluble in water. It has a pleasant ester fragrance. It is used as a solvent and with other compounds as leather adhesive, paint stripper, metal hot plating anti-corrosion coating, etc.

What’s the application of Ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate?

  1. It is obtained by reacting ethylene glycol monoethyl ether with ethyl anhydride by mixing ethyl anhydride and concentrated sulfuric acid, heating to 130℃, then slowly adding ethylene glycol monoethyl ether drop by drop, maintaining the reaction temperature at 130-135℃, adding and refluxing for 1-2h, refluxing at 140℃. After cooling, neutralize with sodium carbonate to pH=7-8, and then dry with industrial anhydrous potassium carbonate. Filter out the drying agent for crude fractional distillation and collect the distillate between 150-160°C. Re-fractionate and collect the fraction between 155.5-156.5°C i.e. Chemicalbook as the finished product. It can also be obtained from the reflux reaction of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether with acetic acid catalyzed by concentrated sulfuric acid in benzene. Ethylene glycol monoethyl ether reacts with acetic acid catalyzed by cationic resin, the generated water is continuously removed, and then the finished product is distilled. 94.5% conversion of acetic acid is obtained by this method, and the selectivity of the product is 98.5%. 2. 2-Ethoxyacetic acid reacts with ethanol. 3. Ethyl acetate and ethoxyethanol ester exchange method. 4. Acetic acid reacts with ethoxyethanol. 5. Ethyl oxide and ethyl acetate reaction method. Ethylene glycol ethyl ether acetate is mainly used as a solvent for metal and furniture spray paint, solvent for brush painting, also used as a solvent for protective paint, dye, resin, leather, ink, also used in the formulation of metal, glass, and other hard surface cleaning agents, and as chemical reagent. Diethylene glycol ethyl ether acetate is mainly used as a copolymerizing agent for emulsion paints. It is an ideal solvent in the production of slow-drying nitrocellulose lacquer, natural lacquer, or spray lacquer because of its excellent solubility and slow evaporation rate.

Diethylene glycol ethyl ether acetate has some toxicity and has the possibility of being replaced by other higher-grade alcohol esters in Europe/USA/Japan.
