Indigo leaves are piled up and watered regularly so that they ferment for 2 to 3 months and become black and clay-like. When pounded with a mortar it is called ball indigo and contains 2% to 10% indigo blue pigment. The ball indigo is mixed with wood ash, lime, and bran, then mixed with water, heated to 30-40°C, and exposed to the air to become blue insoluble indigo.

Mainly used for dyeing cotton yarn, cotton cloth, wool, or silk, the pigment is an important product for the pigmentation of the reduction dye indigo, with excellent light and weather fastness and heat stability, giving a blue tint, and can be prepared in liquid dispersion dosage form, mainly used for coloring and printing of viscose fiber stock. It is used as a biochemical agent and indicator as well as dyeing of cotton yarn, cotton cloth, wool or silk, etc.

Used as a food colouring agent, China’s regulations can be used in red and green silk, the maximum use of 0.02g/kg; in juice (taste) drinks, carbonated beverages, prepared wine, candy, pastries on the colored, dyed cherry cans (for decoration), plum, the maximum use of 0.10g/kg; in the maximum use of 0.01g/kg in dipping vegetables.
