Description of Lead monoxide

Lead(II) oxide, also called lead monoxide, is the inorganic compound with the molecular formula PbO. PbO occurs in two polymorphs, one litharge having a tetragonal crystal structure and the other massicot having an orthorhombic crystal structure. Modern applications for PbO are mostly in lead-based industrial glass and industrial ceramics, including computer components.

What is Lead monoxide?

Insoluble in water and ethanol, soluble in acetone, nitric acid, liquid alkali, ammonium chloride. Can react with glycerol to harden. Toxic.

1 Used in the manufacture of PVC plastic stabilizers. It is the raw material of other lead salts.

  1. used in the manufacture of high refractive index optical glass, ceramic enamel, plane abrasive for precision machine tools.
  2. used in electronic tubes, picture tubes, optical glass, and lead glass against X-rays and radiation-proof rubber products.
  3. for chemical analysis, such as determination of gold and silver, precipitation of amino acids.
  4. for the preparation of soluble lead salts in lead plating and alloys, such as the preparation of lead fluoroborate, etc.
  5. in the paint industry with oil to make lead soap, and used in petroleum, rubber, glass, enamel, and other industries.
