Description of Potassium iodide
Potassium iodide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula KI. This white salt is the most commercially significant iodide compound, with approximately 37,000 tons produced in 1985. It is less hygroscopic (absorbs water less readily) than sodium iodide, making it easier to work with. Potassium iodide occurs naturally in kelp. Kelp’s iodide content can range from 89 µg/g to 8165µg/g.
Aged and impure samples are yellow because of the slow oxidation of the salt to potassium carbonate and elemental iodine.
Potassium iodide is medicinally used for thyroid blockade, thyroid storm and also as an expectorant. It is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, the most important medications needed in a basic health system.

What is Potassium iodide?
With the progress of science and technology and the development of society, chemical products have invariably permeated our daily lives, in medicine, food, cosmetics, electronics, industry, and other areas, becoming an essential part of our lives. One such product is Potassium iodide which has developed particularly rapidly in recent years. Do you know about Potassium iodide?
The official answer Potassium iodide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula KI. It is a colorless or white crystal, odorless, and has a strong bitter-salty taste. It is used medicinally as a diuretic and can be added to salt in appropriate amounts to prevent and treat thyroid disorders. Colorless or white crystalline powder, density 3.13g/cm3, melting point 618℃, boiling point 1345℃, easily soluble in water and ethanol. The aqueous solution turns dark when exposed to light and iodine is freed. Potassium iodide can react chemically with many substances and these reactions are carried out via the I- in KI. The radius of I- is the largest among the halogen ions, therefore, I- easily forms complexes with transition metal ions and d-zone metal ions; I- is more reducible than Br- and Cl- and is easily oxidized to I2 monomers; the solubility of iodides is similar to that of chlorides and bromides; iodides of Ag+, Hg2+, Cu+, Hg2+, and Pb2+ are insoluble and the precipitates are mostly colored.
What’s the application of Potassium iodide?
Potassium iodide is an ionic compound in which iodine ions can form a dark yellow precipitate of silver iodide with silver ions (decomposed by light and used to make high-speed photographic films), so silver nitrate can be used to test for the presence of iodine ions. Iodine, as a component of thyroxine, is closely related to the basal metabolism of livestock and is involved in almost all material metabolic processes. Iodine deficiency in livestock can cause hypertrophy of the thyroid gland and a decrease in the basal metabolic rate, affecting growth and development. Iodine needs to be added to the feed of young animals and livestock in iodine-deficient areas, and the feed of high-yielding dairy cows and high-yielding egg-laying hens as their iodine needs increase. The iodine in milk and eggs increases with the increase in feed iodine. Highly iodized eggs have been reported to reduce human cholesterol levels and are beneficial to the health of people with high blood pressure. In addition, during animal fattening, although not iodine deficient, iodide is also supplemented to keep the thyroid gland of livestock and poultry functioning vigorously, to increase resistance to stress, and to maintain maximum raw production capacity. Potassium iodide is added to feed as a source of iodine to prevent and control iodine deficiency disorders, promote growth, increase egg production and reproduction rates, and improve feed utilization. The amount added to feed is usually a few PPM because Because of its instability, iron citrate and calcium stearate (usually 10%) are usually added as protective agents to make it stable. The main ingredient is potassium iodide. In the event of a radiation leak from a nuclear power plant, iodine tablets are given to the surrounding population to saturate the thyroid gland with iodine and reduce the absorption of radioactive iodine-131 by the thyroid gland. However, they are only effective if taken within 4 hours of exposure to free iodine radiation and do not protect against free radiation and isotopes other than iodine-131. Improperly administered to the general public without instruction can cause symptoms of hyperthyroidism. It is also used in the preparation of photographic emulsifiers and the pharmaceutical industry for photographic emulsions, soap, lithography, organic synthesis, medicine, and food additives. It can be used in table salt at a dosage of 30-70mg/kg and in baby food at a dosage of 0.3-0.6mg/kg. potassium iodide is a permitted food iodine fortifier and is used in baby food at a dosage of 0.3-0.6mg/kg. As a component of thyroxine, iodine is involved in the metabolism of all substances and maintains the heat balance in the body. It is an essential hormone for livestock growth, reproduction, and lactation, and can improve the growth performance of livestock and promote the health of the organism. If the livestock body is deficient in iodine, it will lead to metabolic disorders, disorders in the body, goiter, affect the nerve function and the digestion and absorption of fur and feed, and eventually lead to slow growth and development. Used as a nutritional supplement (iodine fortifier). Less than 0.01% in table salt. Used as an analytical reagent, chromatography and spot analysis uses are raw materials for the manufacture of iodides and dyes. Used as a photographic sensitizer emulsifier. Used in medicine as an expectorant, diuretic, goiter control agent, and pre-operative drug for hyperthyroidism, also used in the manufacture of rheumatic pain relief creams with pain-relieving and blood activating effects. Used as a co-solvent for iodine and some insoluble metal iodides. Used as a feed additive for livestock. Used in the food industry as a nutritional supplement (iodine fortifier).
