Sulfolane (also tetramethylene sulfone, systematic name: 2,3,4,5-tetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide) is an organosulfur compound, formally a cyclic sulfone, with the formula (CH2)4SO2. It is a colorless liquid commonly used in the chemical industry as a solvent for extractive distillation and chemical reactions. Sulfolane was originally developed by the Shell Oil Company in the 1960s as a solvent to purify butadiene. Sulfolane is a polar aprotic solvent, and it is readily soluble in water.

The official answer: Cyclobutane sulfone, also known as tetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide, chemical formula C4H8O2S, colorless transparent liquid, is an excellent nonprotonic polar solvent, miscible with water, acetone, toluene, etc. It is also an ideal solvent for the aromatic extraction process in the petrochemical industry. Cyclobutane sulfone is easy to decompose under high temperatures. When it is below 220°C, the decomposition rate is relatively slow, but when it exceeds 220°C, the decomposition rate rises sharply as the temperature rises. The excessive temperature will prompt the decomposition of cyclobutane sulfone to generate black polymer and sulfur dioxide, and when air is present, the release of sulfur dioxide in the solvent system is more than when no air is present due to the oxidation of air.
What’s the application of Sulfolane?
The colorless and odorless solid melts into a colorless and transparent liquid at 27~28℃. Miscible with water, mixed xylene, methyl mercaptan, and ethyl mercaptan, also soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons and alcohols. Used as gas chromatography stationary solution and analytical reagent, also used in organic synthesis. It is a polar solvent with strong solvency and good selectivity. Most organic compounds and polymers are soluble in cyclobutane sulfone or miscible with it. It is mainly used as an extractant for aromatic extraction, solvent for polymer spinning or film casting, purification of natural gas and synthesis gas, refinery gas, purification and desulfurization of synthesis gas, and as a solubilizer for rubber and plastic. In addition, Chemical books can also be used in the textile printing and dyeing industry as a printing and dyeing auxiliary, which can make the color vivid and bright. Cyclobutane sulfone solvent has a high solvency capacity for aromatics, good selectivity, good thermal stability, low vapor pressure, low toxicity, and no corrosion of carbon steel, so cyclobutane sulfone extraction technology has become the most widely used aromatics extraction technology in the world. It is used for natural gas purification and desulfurization, aromatics extraction of reformed oil, and removal of impurities such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and organic sulfur from hydrogen. A highly efficient multi-purpose solvent; gas chromatography stationary solution (maximum use temperature 100℃, solvent acetone), separation and analysis of low-level hydrocarbon isomers; used as a selective solvent for gas-liquid extraction, extraction of aromatic hydrocarbons from aliphatic hydrocarbons, removal of acidic gases from gas mixtures.
