Terbinafine hydrochloride, also known under the trade name Lamisil, is an antifungal developed by Novartis and Omega Pharma. It is highly hydrophobic and tends to accumulate in hair, skin, nails, and fatty tissue.
It is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, the most important medications needed in a basic health system.

What is Terbinafine?

The official answer: Terbinafine, an allylamine antifungal drug, inhibits squalene epoxidase in the process of ergosterol synthesis in fungal cells and causes squalene to accumulate in the cells and act as a fungicide. The sensitivity of human cells to terbinafine is one ten-thousandth that of fungi. Terbinafine has a broad-spectrum antifungal effect, with fungicidal effect on skin fungi and antibacterial effect on Candida albicans. It is suitable for skin and nail infections caused by superficial fungi, such as ringworm, ringworm of the body, ringworm of the femur, ringworm of the feet, ringworm of the nail and Candida albicans infections caused by Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum canis and Flocculina epidermidis.

What’s the application of Terbinafine?

Internal use is indicated for the treatment of ① infections of skin, hair and toenails caused by Trichophyton rubrum (Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton spp., Trichophyton verrucosum, Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton purpureum), Microsporum sp. and Flocculina epidermidis. ② Various ringworm diseases and skin yeast infections caused by Candida. ③Nail fungus (nail fungus infection) caused by fungus. White crystalline use allylamine antifungal drugs, its antibacterial spectrum than naphthachemicalbookfen broader, higher antifungal activity. Can highly selective inhibition of fungal squalene epoxidase, so that the fungal cell membrane formation process squalene epoxidation reaction is blocked, and destroy the generation of the fungal cell membrane, to kill or inhibit the role of fungus. It is safe, low toxicity, has low side effects, is well tolerated for oral and topical use, without teratogenicity or embryotoxicity. It is clinically used for various dermal fungal infections (tinea pedis, ringworm and ringworm) and nail fungal infections.
