Diethylaminohydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate (DHHB) is a chemical sunscreen that is used as a UV filter in cosmetics and sunscreen products. DHHB protects the skin from sun exposure by absorbing UV rays. (It can also be used to protect products from UV damage, for example in the US, where it is only allowed for this purpose and not as a skin sunscreen). EDmaRC found the following “Biomonitoring studies show that more than 90% of the Danish population excretes UV filters in their urine not only during the summer months but throughout the year. It is caused by the widespread industrial use of UV filters, not only in sunscreens but also in many other everyday consumer products such as personal care products, food packaging, furniture, clothing, detergents, toys, cleaning agents, etc. The widespread use of UV filters is due to their unique properties that protect colors from reddening and prevent plastics from melting due to exposure to sunlight.”
