It is used as an intermediate for the pharmaceutical fenaral and as a stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride.It is made from acrylonitrile and thiourea as raw material. Firstly, thiourea and hydrochloric acid are reacted at 40℃ for 0.5h, acrylonitrile is added dropwise, reacted at 110-113℃ for 3h, cooled to 40℃, 4% sodium hydroxide solution is added to pH 11, dehydrogenated for 4h, then neutralised at 3Chemicalbook0℃ with hydrochloric acid to pH 1-2. Then benzene is added to extract, benzene is recovered and distilled under reduced pressure, 125-140℃ fraction is collected to obtain finished product. In addition, 3-mercaptopropionic acid can also be produced by the reaction of hydrogen sulphide with pyruvic acid or with β-propanolactone.
