Terephthalaldehyde is an important fine chemical material downstream of paraxylene. Because of two active aldehyde groups in its molecular structure, it can be self-polymerized or copolymerized with other monomers to form polymeric materials, which are mainly used in the synthesis of fluorescent materials, catalyst carriers, and other polymeric products. Terephthalaldehyde is traditionally produced by chlorination of paraxylene, followed by hydrolysis in the presence of nitric acid or metal oxides.

Preparation method:
- Using p-xylene, carbon tetrachloride, azobisisobutyronitrile, and chlorine gas as raw materials and solvents, benzyl chloride was obtained, which was later oxidized under the catalytic action of nitric acid and zinc nitrate. The addition of zinc nitrate improved the yield of p-terephthalaldehyde to over 89% and the product purity was higher than 99.0%. Chlorinated hydrolysis usually directly uses highly toxic chlorine gas, which is very unfriendly to the environment. To avoid the direct use of chlorine gas, N-fluorosis(benzenesulfonamide) and sodium chloride were firstly used to react with p-xylene for the highly selective synthesis of p-dichlorobenzene, followed by 98% concentrated sulfuric acid and manganese dioxide catalysis to obtain the crude terephthalaldehyde, and finally, sodium hydroxide was used to neutralize the oxidation mother liquor, and the finished terephthalaldehyde was obtained by recrystallization in ethanol-water mixture with a 77% weight yield of terephthalaldehyde.
